Character

Name: Josephine Shimamura / 009
Canon: Cyborg 009
Age: Physically 18, actually about 20
Type: Fem!AU
Canon point: Just before the end of the series, when her and Jet are falling through the atmosphere thinking they’re gonna die.

History:

Josephine starts out life as an orphan, with her Japanese mother dying when she was a baby after her foreigner father abandoned them. Having no parents, being of mixed blood, and along with constantly getting into trouble with the rest of the orphans, Jo was then branded an outcast in her community. This stigma surrounding her was detrimental later in life. When the priest that ran the orphanage was murdered and Jo was found on the scene, it was naturally assumed that she was the killer. Innocent but shaken and panicking, she ran from the police, and rashly jumped in to the ocean to escape.

Escape she did, but from the proverbial frying pan and into the fire. Jo was then picked up by the secret organization Black Ghost to be used as a research subject. Because she had no family ties and was a wanted criminal suspect, her disappearance would not raise suspicion. The next time Jo woke up her life would never be the same.

Black Ghost is a collection of arms dealers that desire to sow the seeds of war around the world. War on a global scale would mean massive profits for Black Ghost, as they plan to sell weapons to each faction involved in the conflict. But as weaponry advances, the threat of the world being totally destroyed becomes a real possibility. The solution to this problem was to create a new breed of soldiers that could fight in places such as the void of space or the depths of the ocean and therefore prevent life from being wiped out completely. These new super weapons where the cyborgs, half human and half machine in nature.

There were nine cyborg prototypes initial created by Black Ghost as experiments to perfect the technology. Jo, now better known as 009, was the last in this line to be manufactured. When she awoke after his transformation, a voice psychically called out to her and gave her directions on how to escape. More than a little confused but not having much in the way of other options, 009 followed the advice of fellow cyborg 001. Eventually she met with the rest of the ‘team’, a group of individuals whose new powers where as varied as their cultural backgrounds. Together they managed to escape Black Ghost and destroy what they thought was the organizations base of operations.

Unfortunately, they did not shut down Black Ghost as they thought they had, as assassins where then routinely sent out to dispose of the rebel prototypes. Through teamwork, the Zero-Zero cyborgs managed to defeat every enemy that came to kill them even though each successive assassin was stronger than the last, and technically supposed to be stronger than themselves. Finally, the team tracked down the real headquarters of Black Ghost and destroyed them for the sake of humanity.

And for a time, things returned to relative normalcy for the cyborgs. Many went back to their home countries to try to start life over again. Soon though, it was apparent that Black Ghost still wasn’t gone, and the team reassembled once again when the Mythos cyborgs made their appearance. This set of enemies had no idea that they were anything but the Greek gods they appeared to be, although it was obvious to the Zero-Zero team that they were not deities in the slightest.

After the confrontation and ensuing altercation with the Mythos cyborgs, with lead to their destruction in a volcanic firestorm, the team again tried to go back to a normal lifestyle. But this time they were more on their guard and gathered again when presumed prehistoric beasts started attacking multiple countries around the world. Knowing these couldn’t be natural events, they investigated and found that Black Ghost was indeed selling weapons to combat the very threat they had created—weapons that instead of stopping the re-created dinosaurs from attacking them would in turn bomb other countries, in an effort to jumpstart another world war.

In the final battle that came as a result of their intervention, 009 had 001 telekinetically transport her to the space station that was Black Ghost’s true base of operations so she could destroy it. She did this knowing full well she would be able to return home alive. She succeeds in destroying the literal brain of the Black Ghost organization, and continues to believe in the good potential of humanity even as the leaders of Black Ghost claim they will never truly die, because violence is so ingrained in human nature. 002, who can fly, attempts to save her from space, but runs out of fuel for reentry and they both are set to perish by burning up in the stratosphere.

Thought the 2001 series is cut short by the sudden death Ishinimori, the creator of the original manga, there are a few episodes after the “final” one that state that they did not die and where saved by 001’s psychic powers. Unfortunately it did stop airing before another story arc got off the ground, so that’s why I’m taking her from this particular canon point.

Personality:

009 can be a complicated character. She’s young, in technicality the youngest out of all the Zero-Zero cyborgs, which can make her rash and idealistic. She would rather find a way to make friends or reason with the enemy than fight them right off the bat, but if innocents or comrades are in danger she is known to jump into the fray without a second thought. Often she pushes his limits and injures herself for others, such as the time she went to fight alongside her teammates after taking heavy damage in a previous battle, and 009 nearly got herself killed because of it. Regardless of the personal risk, she thought it was much worse to lay in hiding while her friends were out fighting for their very lives.

Because of her harsh upbringing, she is very empathetic to the hardships of others. She is immensely kind to people no matter their background or circumstances because she knows what it’s like to be discriminated against. 009 could have turned out to be very cynical and jaded because of her past and the current situation forced on Black Ghost, but she maintains her optimism about people and the world. Often she can come off as naïve because of this, but even as her violent experiences and exposure to the dark side of humanity have tempered her views somewhat, 009 still maintains that humans are inherently good. She is always the first to trust someone that the other cyborgs may view as a potential threat, but her open nature and charisma are what propel her into becoming the leader of the team. 009 is always ready to sacrifice herself for others and is always interested in doing the right thing.

009 is also not the perfect example of a crusader of the light. As a child it’s shown that her and some of the other orphans regularly played pranks on people and constantly got into trouble. And while she doesn’t like fighting even as she knows it’s necessary for his survival, she is surprisingly good at combat, and near the end of her canon she realizes that subconsciously she looks forward for the challenge and the thrill of the fight. She’s got a bit of a temper on her as well, as she is known to snap and react violently to high tension or traumatic situations. The best example of this is when 009 was sent to the future and she discovered that in the end Black Ghost had won and was dominating the world. Angry at the idea that her entire struggle had been for nothing, she went on a rampage against the forces of Black Ghost and destroyed a great number of them indiscriminately. Any time someone close to her is in danger or the specifics of a situation set her off, she has this tendency to react with outbursts of violence.

Sometimes her inner teenager shows through everything else. While at the end of his canon she is technically 20 years old, she was barely 18 when Black Ghost kidnapped her. Often when something has happened, such as a tragic event when a potential ally in their fight has been killed by the enemy, 009 will take to being moody and brooding. Initially after their escape the lab, she distanced himself from the rest of the cyborgs and would consistently avoid contact in favor of moping around. Granted, she had due cause to do this considering all that had happened, but throughout the canon she does this again and again. This again shows how young and inexperienced she really is.

Abilities:
-Bullet-proof skin. Also shown to be fire resistant, and probably can’t be cut by say a sword or a kitchen knife.
-Super strength. Like throwing cars around and being able to jump really high, but not able to pick up whole buildings or something.
-Acceleration Mode; in essence, super speed. She can literally run so fast that the world slows down around her. However, she can’t use it continually for too long or her body structure suffers.
-Can go without oxygen for short periods.
-General cyborg-ness???
-Being a shonen shojo protag
